Applebee’s History

You cannot talk about casual dining in the United States without mentioning Applebee’s International, Inc. The firm is a leader in the sector and operates more than 2000 restaurants under the name Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar, about 500 of which it owns. The restaurant’s concept concentrates mainly on casual dining with primary American foods such as chicken, shrimp, riblets and pasta.

Origins

The first Applebee’s restaurant was opened by William Palmer and his wife in Atlanta in 1980 under the name T.J. Applebee’s Rx for Edibles & Elixirs. Offering a comfortable and unique menu, the eatery was a great success. The restaurateur’s objective was to create a pub and restaurant like neighborhood where people could order quality foods at affordable prices. Although simple, the concept was successful that it began attracting attention of larger food firms like W.R. Grace & Co. which eventually purchased the concept from William and T. J. Palmer 1983.

Applebee’s Major Growth Spurt

Even though the W.R.Grace &Co managed to bring more franchises into the system, it had only attained moderate profitability and growth by 1987.Hence in 1988, the company sold the restaurant’s concept to John Hamra and Abel Gustin. Under the new leadership, Applebee’s International Inc.’s revenues soared 500% to over 24.21 million dollars in 1989.The increase was largely attributed to the new franchises that the new owners were acquiring. By the year 2007 the company had grown to over 1000 units.

Applebee’s was acquired by IHOP corp in November 2007 and as a result IHOP changed its name to DineEquity. As of April 2016 the firm had over 2000 table service restaurants operating in the United States, Puerto Rico and other countries all operated and owned by franchisees.

Highlights:

  • 1980: Bill and T.J. Palmer, open the first ever Applebee’s restaurant
  • 1983: W.R. Grace & Co. buys the Applebee’s concept from the Palmers.
  • 1988: Abe Gustin and John Hamra Purchase Applebee’s from Grace.
  • 1989: Applebee’s International Inc. goes public.
  • 1997: Abe Gustin leaves day-to-day management of the company.
  • 2007: DineEquity Acquires Applebee’s

  1. This looks great, however, less than HALF of the items shown, are actually available! Whatever happened to truth in advertising?

  2. Notice that the lettuce wedge is not listed but the green goddess dressing is listed as a gluten free dressing. Just wonder if it gluten free.

  3. I do not recommend this restaurant for celiacs or sensitive allergies/intolerances. There is heavy cross-contamination in the kitchens. I would stick with baked potato and salads on this list, but no proteins.

  4. Thanks for the comment Alysha! Ya unfortunately it is hit or miss with some Applebees. I do ok at my local one, but I have eaten at other ones where I don’t :( Sometimes definitely not worth the gamble, otherwise you end up feeling crappy for days on end afterwards.

    • Hey Lisa!

That is a great question. I wish they did. It is frustrating that some of these restaurants aren’t getting gluten-free options. Don’t be afraid to email their corporate office. The more they hear from people the more likely they will think about doing something. In fact, I am going to start adding contact information on all the menus.

  5. I will never eat at Applebee’s again. When I asked the hostess if there was a gluten-free menu I got a blank stare and she had no clue about gluten-free. She told me it wasn’t her responsibility and to ask my server. Well, he had no clue either. My partner’s steak was burnt, his salad had wilted lettuce in it, and when he asked for a drink it took 10 minutes to get it. Nope, never again!

  6. We ate at Applebee’s for the first time in about a year. I was hesitant as I’m a Celiac and can’t have wheat. I had the Bourbon Chicken and Shrimp with a side dish of mashed potatoes. I ate every morsel. Not only was it good I didn’t get the stomach ache or any other discomforts from eating gluten. The waitress at Applebee’s on Southern in Mesa was Kaitlyn and she was so nice and so helpful. With the pandemic they were not busy but everyone loved their meal and we were not rushed as we visited for about two hours. Great experience. Thank you!

  7. I have celiac disease and haven’t had a problem with eating at Applebee’s. The servers seem to be very knowledgeable and helpful at my neighborhood Applebee’s. Food is very good.

  8. How come only the ribeye steaks are the only steaks gluten free? What do you do to a sirloin that makes it something other than gluten free that you don’t do to a ribeye? I assume that both kind of steaks are prepared on the same grill.
