Chick-fil-A History

Chick-fil-A is a fast food restaurant that was first opened in the mid-1960s. It’s the brainchild of Truett Cathy who launched the diner at a local suburban Atlanta mall in 1967. Since then, they have grown to become one of the largest quick-service chains in America with a particular emphasis on chicken.

Chick-fil-A has more than 2,000 locations spread across 43 states and even Washington, D.C. In fact, their latest sales report shows that the restaurant had an annual profit record of $6 billion in 2015.

The food chain is privately owned and has been run by a single family for more than 48 years since its inception. The positive sales growth attests to their good management skills and quality food that customers enjoy. Chick-fil-A sets itself apart from other restaurants by pioneering new innovations and tasty products, such as their popular Chicken Sandwich.

Though most of their restaurants are found in malls, they also have other unique outlets such as stand-alone bistros, drive-thrus, Dwarf House and Truett’s Grill as well as other innovative concepts. Additionally, as part of their mission to have a positive influence in the community, most of the company’s franchisees offer programs that aid in enriching local communities.

For instance, some have partnered with local schools to distribute certain core essentials for education and also foster value development. Others have even launched fundraising efforts whereby Chick-fil-A products and goods are used as student incentives.

Furthermore, many franchise operators offer weekly Kid’s/Family themed nights where everyone is encouraged to come together and have fun while also enjoying quality food. Over the last 4 years, the company and its affiliates have provided more than $68 million in donations to more than 700 education and charity organizations, including food donations worth millions of dollars all across America. Throughout their existence, Chick-fil-A has built a foundation on a commitment to quality service for their customers and the community at large. Their motto is one client at a time.

  1. Not sure if it’s a nationwide or regional thing but the chick-fil-a near me(Seattle area) has started offering gluten free buns with their grilled chicken sandwiches. The buns come individually wrapped and you have to assemble the sandwich yourself.

      • The way they word it is confusing. Will the waffle fries be fried in gluten shared oil? Are they just saying it to prevent a lawsuit from someone who gets sick? It’s like the recent Papa John’s GF crust going wide (I think). They seem cautious to tell Celiacs it is safe. If CFA’s bun is not for Celiacs, then why go to the trouble of having its own wrapper and the customer assemble it? I don’t think someone who is GF diet by choice would care about small cross contamination.

        • Hey TD,
So the bun is certified gluten-free. I updated the article above. I tend to stay away from fries at these types of places, but I have ordered the sandwich and gluten-free bun dozens of time now and never had an issue. Note: I am not Celiac, but highly gluten intolerant.

  2. I’ve been eat up with RA for 30 years and only recently had it suggested to me, by a new (to me) physician, to try this, -so I’m new to the gluten free environment, -and I’m sure I’ve got a lot to learn. But, recently I tried Chick-fil-a’s bun, and while I commend them for making the effort, I thought I had put a spoonful of sand in my mouth, -it was so dry! Has this been others experience or did I just get hold of a bad bun?

    • Hey Mark, perhaps you got a bad bun? I think they taste amazing. Although I haven’t had real bread for years haha. So my bar is probably set pretty low. However, I always put mayo and ketchup on mine.

  3. I am celiac and have been eating their GF bun since they brought it out. I really appreciate their effort, especially since very few others have followed suit. The bun is dry but not too bad. GF buns tend to be dry anyway and I have found that 20 seconds in a microwave works wonders. Chick-fil-a has no microwaves and apparently are not allowed to have them in their kitchens. Too bad.

  4. It’s frustrating that some of the Chick-fil-A employees have no clue about gluten free. I have been a victim of an allergic reaction because of poor advice in stores. I believe more training is important. Tread carefully.

  5. I have been told that the fries are safe, for GF, that breaded nuggets are not fried in the same oil. My question is, what do you do with the oil at the end of the day? Is it filtered with the oil that the breaded nuggets are fried in, because that would contaminate the fries?

  6. I would like to caution all of those with celiac to careful with this restaurant. On two different occasions as well as different locations, I tested the waffle fries and grilled nuggets using the Nima sensor. Both results were gluten found. As much as this place has been a favorite of mine, my health is more important than a tasty meal. They really should be more careful claiming items to be GF when they are not.

    • Maybe someone didn’t change their gloves before preparing your meal? Let them know you are very intolerant and ask them to change their gloves before preparing your food.

  7. Why do i need to pay extra for a gluten free bun? The sandwich cost already includes the price of a bun which I cannot eat.

  8. Hi! I am so glad to hear the advancements of gluten-free. It’s awesome. I have been gluten-free for many years. I now am allergic to all red meat and chicken. This happened from a tick bite. I am hoping more vegan options will become more common.

  10. I have Celiac, if you do not like GF bread I have an altenative. I can have sourdough bread that I make myself now and that I also buy at bakeries. I could not believe it but after I ate real sourdough bread and nothing happened over and over again, I started to bake my own but when I did not bake or during summer when I do not want to trun on the oven I buy sourdough that has been bulk raised meaning over night at bakeries. It has changed my life and my relatioship with food.

    Happy eating,

    Rachel
