Famous Dave’s History

Famous Dave’s is an American barbecue restaurant chain that was formed in 1994 by Dave Anderson. He opened his first store in Hayward, Minnesota in a small resort that he had purchased earlier. Soon afterwards, the restaurant became a huge success and was serving up to 1,000 people daily.

Anderson claims to have been searching for the perfect barbecue sauce to use for the past 20 years, and after finding none he decided to create his own recipe by starting a new BBQ company. The eatery began as a hobby for Dave, but later on grew in to an investment after he spent close to two million dollars in putting up a new building for the restaurant. It featured some of his favorite sauces including the Rich & Sassy, Texas Pit, Hot Stuff, Devil’s Spit and George Mustard.

In 1995, Famous Dave’s opened their second location in Minneapolis with a seating capacity of 75. Back then they were only using the screened-in porches for guests. Later on, the ‘shack’ concept with an Americana theme was introduced in the restaurant. That same year, the restaurant earned a blue ribbon award in the “Best BBQ Sauce in America” challenge that was conducted at the American Royal International BBQ Contest.

A year later, the company was already making $1 million in annual turnover sales and Dave was thinking about taking his business to the next level in terms of growth. He introduced a new concept to his restaurant featuring barbecue chops and blues music playing in the background which proved hard to resist for most locals.

In October of 1996, Famous Dave’s announced its first initial public offering (IPO) and was traded on NASDAQ under the ticker name DAVE. Their share prices grew in the first day of sales from $6.25 to $11.25 on a value of 2.3 million units. Currently, there are 45 Famous Dave’s locations operating in seven states across the country. They feature three different themes including a hunting lodge, a bluesclub and a roadhouse barbeque shack.

  1. Devils Spit and Rich and Sassy BBQ sauce have barley malt flour on label. This is not gluten free. The allergen chart on Famous Dave’s website only lists wheat, not other gluten ingredients. BEWARE!!!!

  2. They were very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, other than the grilled chicken every meat contains gluten. There is very little to eat here if you are GF.
