Fanta History

Fanta is a soft drink beverage owned by the Coca-Cola Company and was the 2nd brand to be produced by the company after Coke. While Orange Fanta is the most recognized flavor and is available in 180 countries around the world, there are also 70 other flavors sold internationally. The product began back in the World War II era when a trading embargo was imposed on Germany by the Allied Nations which meant that Coca-Cola wasn’t able to transport the syrup needed for making Coke into Germany.

Following this development, Dr. Schetelig decided to invent a new beverage for the German market to replace Coca-Cola. It was to be made using ingredients that were only available in Germany, which at the time included apple fiber and derivatives of cheese. This new product had an orange taste and was yellow in color.

The name Fanta is borrowed from “fantasie” which means “imagination” in German. Indeed the inventor needed a great vision to imagine that cheese and apple could make a tasty orange-flavored beverage. The name was proposed by a salesperson known as Joe Knipp. The Coca-Cola Company became interested in this name and decided to settle for it.

Fanta’s inaugural flavor was Orange which was launched in Naples, Italy on April 29, 1955. The Naples distributor was the first to produce and sell the new Orange Fanta product, using locally sourced citrus ingredients. During that same period, famous brand designer Raymond Loewy submitted around 25-30 designs for consideration. Out of these, the ringed bottle with a Loewy “twin-peak” design on the edge was selected.

In 1960, Fanta introduced the first line of products in the United States, which was a trademark destination for flavored beverages distributed by Coca-Cola bottlers. As a leading international soft drink brand, they launched a campaign based on overseas market locations to emphasize Fanta as a global fashion statement. At the turn of the century, Fanta introduced a new attractive plastic bottle for fans nicknamed the “Splash” bottle. Their brand slogan is “More Fanta. Less Serious.”
