Panera Bread Gluten-Free Menu 2024

Here is the complete Panera Bread gluten-free menu.

Panera Bread might not seem like the best place to go for a gluten-free meal, especially because they do not offer any gluten-free bread. However, they actually have a good amount of gluten-free options on the rest of their menu including soups, salads, and some other snacks.

They do say that due to the amount of gluten-containing foods that they prepare, cross-contamination can be a risk with pretty much everything and it might not be a good place if you have celiac disease or are highly sensitive to gluten. But for those just looking to avoid gluten in their diet, Panera Bread might be a good place to go for a snack or light meal.

Panera Bread history

Panera Bread is a United States based bakery café chain with operations both in America and Canada. Their headquarters are located in Sunset Hills, Missouri in a suburb of St. Louis. Some of the items they have on offer include salads, soups, sandwiches, pasta and baked products. The restaurant was founded in 1987 by Ronald Shaich, Ken Rosenthal and Louis Kane.

The company, which was then known as St. Louis Bread Company, was acquired by Au Bon Pain in 1993. The new owners changed its name to Panera Bread in 1997. The new company name combined the Italian phrases pane (bread) and era (time), simply meaning “time of bread”.

For purposes of expansion, the owners sold their other chains in May 1999 to remodel Panera as a national brand. The company’s operation base was also moved to a new location in 2000. Though the business was initially started in a local 400 square foot store, it has since grown to be one of the largest fast food restaurants in the country.

Over the past few years, their stock ratio has increased to 243%, making Panera the 2nd best performing restaurant in America after Chipotle. Furthermore, they were mentioned in the Fortune 1,000 list of 2012 after recording a total sales revenue of $1.8 billion, including $3.4 billion in company-wide sales.

Panera has various projects that are geared towards community service such as Panera Cares. Through this program, they usually donate $100 million per year in cash and products to their surrounding communities. The company operates around 1,800 bakery cafes in 40 states, as well as 20 facilities that supply fresh dough to various locations each day. The company presents itself as a peaceful “Bakery Café” that offers a wide variety of pastries and baked items such as cookies, brownies, bagels and croissants. These desserts, alongside their signature bread, are usually baked before dawn by on-location cooks so as to maintain high levels of freshness and quality.

Summary

We wish Panera Bread actually made some gluten-free bread, but they do have a good amount of lighter options like soups and salads that are technically gluten-free. It may not be the best place to go, especially if you are highly allergic to gluten, but we do appreciate the openness about cross contamination and the up to date information about avoiding gluten on their menu that they provide on their website!

  1. I looked up the ingredients for the soups and the creamy tomato lists wheat flour so NOT gluten free.
Thank you for this menu though!

    • Hey Shirley,
I agree, they really need to get with the program and offer at least some type of gluten-free bread alternative. Chick-fil-A, Jersey Mikes, all have gluten-free bread now. You would think they could do the same.

  2. Was just at my local Panera and ordered potato soup which the site says GF, but the employee said the only GF soup is chili. Can you confirm?

    • Hey Melisa,
So according to Panera, they have four different gluten-free soups. However, Chili isn’t one of them. It could be that your local Panera is a franchise and they are offering a slightly modified menu. In that case, I would go with what the employee is telling you. Only they would know what is getting put into their soup.

  3. I have always loved Panera Bread but since being diagnosed with gluten, egg and dairy allergies, it is difficult when ordering due to the lack of training. I have found this issue at any Panera Bread that the young staff are not aware of what they should do to help you order. Having these allergies just means eating very clean which Panera Bread’s menu appears to offer. I usually can go to any restaurant and order a simple dinner. I think some training, simple changes (possibly use GF wraps) and keeping an area for GF would benefit the business. If this means only offering a small amount of items, then the allergen individuals will know exactly what they can order. Now they can come in and enjoy your atmosphere and eat without worries. Panera Bread is still a favorite of mine to meet with friends.

    • Hey Nancy,
Ya, it’s very frustrating to see the lack of training at some of these restaurants. I won’t even step into a Panera Bread.

  4. It would be very helpful to even have just one type of gluten-free bread/bagel/wrap so that there would be a breakfast choice that is gluten free. Please consider. Thank you.

  5. I agree it would be great to see gluten-free bread for sandwiches. Would love to get a sandwich again. I had hoped that Panera would come up with some great tasting gluten-free bread for sale.

  6. You left out the Grain Bowls .. From the Panera site:
    Bowls Without Gluten
Try our Warm Grain Bowls made without gluten-containing ingredients.

Baja Warm Grain Bowl with Chicken*
    Baja Warm Grain Bowl*
Mediterranean Warm Grain Bowl with Chicken*

*These menu items contain oats which carry a ‘may contain wheat’ allergy advisory statement due to the cross-contact that may result from customary methods of growing and harvesting crops, as well as from the use of shared storage, transportation or product equipment. **Given the likelihood of cross-contamination in our bakery-cafe environment, this list is not suitable for people with Celiac Disease, a heightened gluten sensitivity or a wheat allergy.

  8. At age 68 I became gluten sensitive. Panera (which I love) is now a restaurant I don’t consider among my choices. Really miss the asiago bagel.

  9. Interestingly you can get salads made gluten free, but if you look at everyone of the salad dressing choices they all list wheat? Who wants a salad without salad dressing???

  10. My doc recently told me to avoid wheat, corn, dairy and eggs. It seems ironic that I can get a gluten free bun at Lion’s Choice, but not at Panera. I still love it but can’t really eat there anymore.

    • Hey Ella,
Ya, I agree. Restaurants and fast food places can be hit or miss when it comes to accommodating for gluten-free. I never go to Panera because there isn’t much for me to eat there. Hopefully one day they will have something.

What some of these places don’t realize is that all it takes is one family member that has an intolerance or Celiac, and they will lose that entire family’s business forever.

  11. Insensitive to people with certain dietary restrictions especially gluten sensitivity. And yes by all means all employees need to be completely trained in their products and diet restrictions. I’m sorry to say I don’t go there any more! Offering gluten free bread is pretty easy!

  12. Sour dough bread is gluten free as the gluten is removed in the fermentation process. This could be added to the menus for “ gluten sensitive” individuals. Please please, I would love a sourdough sandwich!

  13. Time to step it up, Panera! Get some gluten-free bread! Jersey Mikes and Chick-fil-A have it, so you could too if you really cared!
