However, they actually have a good amount of gluten-free options on the rest of their menu including soups, salads and some other snacks. They do say that due to the amount of gluten containing foods that they prepare, cross contamination can be a risk with pretty much everything and it might not be a good place if you have celiac disease or are highly sensitive to gluten. Panera Bread History
Panera Bread is a United States based bakery café chain with operations both in America and Canada. Their headquarters are located in Sunset Hills, Missouri in a suburb of St. Louis. Some of the items they have on offer include salads, soups, sandwiches, pasta and baked products. The restaurant was founded in 1987 by Ronald Shaich, Ken Rosenthal and Louis Kane.
The company, which was then known as St. Louis Bread Company, was acquired by Au Bon Pain in 1993. The new owners changed its name to Panera Bread in 1997. The new company name combined the Italian phrases pane (bread) and era (time), simply meaning “time of bread”.
For purposes of expansion, the owners sold their other chains in May 1999 to remodel Panera as a national brand. The company’s operation base was also moved to a new location in 2000. Though the business was initially started in a local 400 square foot store, it has since grown to be one of the largest fast food restaurants in the country.
Over the past few years, their stock ratio has increased to 243%, making Panera the 2nd best performing restaurant in America after Chipotle. Furthermore, they were mentioned in the Fortune 1,000 list of 2012 after recording a total sales revenue of $1.8 billion, including $3.4 billion in company-wide sales.
Panera has various projects that are geared towards community service such as Panera Cares. Through this program, they usually donate $100 million per year in cash and products to their surrounding communities. The company operates around 1,800 bakery cafes in 40 states, as well as 20 facilities that supply fresh dough to various locations each day. The company presents itself as a peaceful “Bakery Café” that offers a wide variety of pastries and baked items such as cookies, brownies, bagels and croissants. These desserts, alongside their signature bread, are usually baked before dawn by on-location cooks so as to maintain high levels of freshness and quality.
