Popeyes Gluten-Free Menu 2024

Here is the complete Popeyes gluten-free menu.

Popeyes is probably not the place to go for a gluten-free meal, as they have almost nothing to eat. Granted, they pride themselves on their fried chicken, which is not usually known to be gluten-free anyway.

The only gluten-free options they have on their menu are a few sides and there is probably a decent risk for cross-contamination due to all the gluten-containing foods that they prepare in their kitchen.

If you’re looking to eat gluten-free, we’d suggest going someplace else.

Popeyes History

Popeyes is a popular restaurant chain whose crispy chicken, biscuits and baked potatoes are deeply embedded in American food culture. It was formed in 1972 by Alvin C. Copeland. He opened the first restaurant called Chicken on the Run in a New Orleans town called Arabi, providing traditional Southern-fried chicken. After months of below-par performance, he re-branded the company as Popeyes after the character on The French Connection. He also reconstituted the marketing phrase to New Orleans-style chicken.

By 1984, the restaurant had already gone global and expanded to Toronto, Canada. One year later, Popeyes opened its 500th restaurant in Landover, Maryland, placing them on the international map alongside some of their competitors. It was also during this period that they became the 3rd ranked quick service chicken chain in America, based on the total number of locations opened.

Furthermore, they opened new locations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia right before AFC Enterprises, Inc., then known as America’s Favorite Chicken Company, bought the franchise in 1992. Seven years later, Popeyes surpassed the 1 billion dollar mark in annual sales.

In 2008, the company reinvented itself by introducing a new logo inspired by its roots in traditional Louisiana-inspired home cooking. Thereafter, they launched an award winning recipe called “Wicked Chicken and Cane Sweeeet Iced Tea”. This recipe won them the MenuMasters Award of 2010.

Popeyes opened their 2,000th restaurant in Memphis, TN in 2011. They also introduced a healthier food menu known as Louisiana Leaux with a flash-mob in French Quarter. This focus on healthier  eating is perfect for customers who want to reduce their overall calorie intake. They also entered a partnership with the ProStart program to create the next generation of Popeyes brand followers. Recently, the restaurant has emerged in the news again for being nominated for the Best Play in 2015 ESPY Awards, all thanks to their Inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl event. This was the second annual Bahamas Bowl being hosted by the company.

  1. I contacted Popeye’s years ago (by email) and asked if they were ever planning on having any gluten-free chicken. They never even bothered to respond.

    • Hey DK! Ya, that is why we gave them a 1 star. I have a feeling they will never offer any good options for those of us who have to eat gluten-free :(

      • I don’t think these companies realize that they aren’t just alienating the people with Celiac, but also anyone who goes out to eat with them. When I go out to eat with anyone, obviously we bypass places like Popeye’s; I recently sent Subway an email and asked if they were considering offering gluten free bread; again, not even a response. So whenever I go out for sandwiches with anyone, we go to Erberts & Gerberts. Which is right across the road from Subway.

  2. Maybe fried chicken isn’t a great thing to try to make gluten-free. Can’t expect everything to be convertible to gluten-free. Be realistic.

    • Hey Dog,
Yes, fried chicken is definitely harder than other things, but there are a lot of great gluten-free flours on the market. They don’t realize that all it takes is one family member that has an intolerance or Celiac, and they will lose that entire family’s business forever. So in my opinion, it is realistic, as autoimmune diseases are only on the rise. The fast food chains that do realize this are providing options.

      • Agree with you 💯 Brian! Definitely by pass a lot of places! My go to is strictly Chipotle by me, and Burger 21. (Orland Park Il) The manager there is amazing, there staff has a separate area to prep the food! Including a separate milkshake machine ❤️

  3. I realize it’s expensive to do, but gluten free fried chicken is definitely doable. I’m able to make it at home with no issues. We have a local mom and pop place whose breading just happens to be gluten free. They’re not marketed as a gluten free restaurant even though their entire fried menu just happens to be gluten free. So, I know many of these places could make it an option.
