Zaxby’s Gluten-Free Menu 2024

Here is the complete Zaxby’s gluten-free menu.

Zaxby’s offers some options if you’re looking to eat gluten-free including chicken wings and salads. Be aware that the majority of their menu is not gluten-free and they don’t offer much information on their website on how their food is prepared or anything related to a gluten-free menu.

They do have some good items that don’t contain gluten, but we can’t guarantee that there won’t be some cross-contamination present.

We recommend letting them know before you order if you are eating gluten-free or if you have a food allergy. That being said, they do have some nice looking options on their menu that are free of gluten, even if there isn’t a lot of them.

Zaxby’s History

Zaxby’s is a fast-growing restaurant chain that was founded in 1990 by Zach McLeroy who was a professional drummer prior to opening the store. McLeroy sold his prized drum set for $8,000 before his best friend and business associate Tony Townley matched this investment with his own contribution to open the new restaurant. The first location was an 800 square foot building around Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA.

As Zach describes it, the building looked more like “a deck and parking lot on stilts”, having a basic menu of chicken wings, chicken fingers and a few sandwiches, but it was hugely popular among college students. Zaxby’s has since grown to become one of the most rapidly growing chains in America, with an estimated annual turnover of $1 billion.

During its early years, the restaurant mainly focused on opening locations in college towns, but then changed tactics by expanding to business centers. The company has a lot of loyal customers who have been there since the very beginning when it was formed. Moreover, some of Zaxby’s original franchisees form part of the company’s old-boys network consisting of friends and supporters of the company. In fact, one of the restaurant’s first franchise operators is also one of the foremost insurance guys.

In 2012, the company’s sales revenue grew by 16.6%, according to a report by Franchise Times. They were also ranked among the top 200 largest franchise systems in the world. Zaxby’s has proudly made the Southeast the country’s chicken capital. McLeroy says that part of their success can be attributed to proper timing, being at the right place at the right time and with the correct investment.

The franchise continues to grow in scope with the restaurants getting larger and even more sophisticated with time. Nowadays, the company gets calls from all around the country from people interested in opening their own Zaxby’s franchise locations. The restaurant expects to open around 600 new locations in the next few years.

Summary

Zaxby’s has a few good items that are free of gluten, but we think they could do a much better job at providing some more specific information on their website about eating gluten-free at their restaurant. We wouldn’t suggest going here if you have an extreme gluten allergy but if you’re looking for some chicken wings, it may be worth a try.

  1. Most of their items are not gluten free. Like their French fries ! They are not gluten free unless you ask them to fry them with the wings. Several managers at several locations have verified this and now their allergen menu is under construction and down.

    • Thanks for the heads up Melissa about the Zaxby’s fries not being gluten-free. I have added a note above with a warning.

  2. Yes, I was so thankful to have a manager approach me after hearing my order about no bread to let me know that the fries are in a shared fryer. His wife has Celiac. He said all I would need to do is let them know I need them fried in the wing oil. They are very accommodating. I also called the company and recommended they update heir gluten free menu to say that fries may come from a shared fryer and to ask about it.

    • Wow, great to hear they were so accommodating Tricia. I love it when I find a place that really understands what we go through.

      • I don’t think many have any idea what gluten is all about or the terrible consequences many of us experience. I’m not celiac but I’m down horribly for two solid days when I get gluten. Know of my daughter’s friend who was actually “paralyzed” in her legs for three days & had to miss work.

        • Same here Susan. I have Ulcerative Colitis, not fully Celiac… but gluten will put me out for a minimum of a week :( Therefore I’ve been 100% gluten-free for years now, not by choice, out of the will to live! It’s very true many don’t have any idea how much gluten impacts some of us and how when your stomach hurts, nothing else in life matters.

    • Sorry to hear that Diane! It’s always frustrating when restaurants don’t understand what gluten-free means :(

  4. There are MANY restaurants that offer many foods that are gluten free. So surprised that Zaxby’s had very little to offer. I also have to worry about my granddaughter’s diet at restaurants because she is also allergic to dairy and eggs. I have several printouts from different restaurants in my car so I reference items she can eat. There are more and more people with these allergies every day. I hope restaurants will accept this and adapt accordingly. (because I do love Zaxby’s salads)
